Perhaps you have inherited a jewelry collection or recently received a meaningful jewelry gift. The logical next thought may be: should I get a jewelry appraisal?
It’s not every day someone gets the value of their jewelry documented. Devine & Co. offers certified appraisals of your precious pendants, earrings, necklaces, watches and more, following the standards of the Gemological Institute of America.
What is an Appraisal?
An appraisal is the process of identifying, documenting and valuing jewelry. It is an unbiased process based on science with the goal of providing you with a fair assessment of your heirlooms. Appraisals come in many forms depending on each person’s unique needs.
What Happens During an Appraisal?
After you request an appointment with me for your appraisal, we will meet for a personalized session to determine your appraisal needs.
Let me come to you in a location where you feel most comfortable. I offer a one-on-one, mobile appraisal experience that can help you determine the value of your jewelry. During our appointment, I will inspect, lightly clean and take photos of your pieces before completing a series of tests to determine the quality and grade of your jewelry. I use specialized gemological equipment like a binocular microscope, refractometer and color grading master stones.
Within 3-4 days you will receive my official appraisal documents. You will have additional opportunities to discuss my conclusions and recommendations for you on your collection.
How Do I Prepare for an Appraisal?
- Clean and sanitize your jewelry at home or at a local jeweler.
- Have your jewelry inspected and any necessary jewelry repairs completed.
- Organize any helpful documentation including previous appraisals, receipts, certificates, warranties or provenance papers.
- Categorize jewelry in organized collections in clear zip lock bags.
- Prepare a clean, secure, quiet comfortable area with preferred daylight or daylight equivalent lighting.
Why are Appraisals Important?
If you are considering an appraisal, you realize you have a piece of jewelry or a collection of value. Perhaps you would like to distribute this jewelry to heirs someday or need to liquidate pieces because of a bankruptcy or divorce. Maybe you like to plan ahead and want to know the value of your engagement ring in case of theft.
Appraisals provide a crucial, objective number for the value of a piece of jewelry. Most of the time people request appraisals for insurance reasons. In this case an appraisal helps the client receive an adequate replacement for damaged, lost or stolen jewelry.
If yourself or a loved one will need to distribute significant pieces of jewelry through an estate or a divorce, an appraisal helps the process move more smoothly. Consider scheduling an appraisal appointment for a factual accounting of the value of gemstones, diamonds and jewelry pieces.
Trusted Jewelry Appraisal
Because appraisals rely on an objective, scientific evaluation of jewelry and its individual elements, a certified professional is required.
Be sure to find an appraiser who follows rigorous grading standards, like the Gemological Institute of America. Devine & Co. uses Registered MasterValuer and National Association of Jewelry Appraisers standards. Your jewelry appraisal is always executed according to the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) and U.S. FTC guidelines.
