At Devine & Co. Private Jeweler, I believe clients deserve clear answers, especially when it comes to jewelry, precious metals, and selling gold.
That is why I recently invested in a new professional XRF analyzer for my office in Carmel-by-the-Sea. This tool allows me to test gold, silver, platinum, palladium, coins, watches, and jewelry quickly, accurately, and without damaging the item.
What Is XRF Testing?
XRF stands for X-Ray Fluorescence. In simple terms, the analyzer reads the metal content inside a piece of jewelry and shows the results on the screen.
For example, a piece stamped 14K gold may show:
- Gold (Au): 58.4%
- Copper (Cu): 29.4%
- Silver (Ag): 7.1%
- Zinc (Zn): 5.1%
The screen then shows the karat reading, so you can see exactly what your gold is right before your eyes.
Why This Matters When Selling Gold
If you are thinking about selling gold in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, or Santa Cruz, accurate testing matters.
Gold stamps can be worn, misleading, or sometimes incorrect. A chain may look solid but be hollow. A ring may be stamped 14K but test differently. Some pieces may be gold-filled or plated instead of solid gold.
With XRF testing, there is no guessing. The results appear right on the screen, giving both the client and jeweler a clear understanding of the metal content before any offer is made.

XRF Testing Is Not Only for Selling Gold
You do not have to sell anything to benefit from XRF testing. Some clients simply want to know what they own.
XRF testing can be helpful if you:
- Bought jewelry online and want to verify the metal content
- Purchased gold at an estate sale or antique shop
- Inherited jewelry and want to sort what is precious metal
- Own coins, bullion, or scrap gold and want more information
- Want to confirm whether an item is 10K, 14K, 18K, platinum, silver, or plated
- Need help understanding estate jewelry before selling or dividing items
Clients may simply pay for a test for their own knowledge, whether they are selling gold, verifying a recent purchase, or sorting through inherited jewelry.
The Safety Accessory Was an Important Part of the Investment
One of the most important parts of this system is the enclosed testing accessory. This allows items to be tested inside a shielded chamber, eliminating any risk of radiation exposure during the testing process.
That was extremely important to me. I wanted the benefits of advanced testing technology, but I also wanted the process to feel safe, professional, and comfortable for clients.
The enclosed accessory allows the item to be tested in a controlled space while the results are displayed clearly on the screen.
Transparency and Fairness
For me, this tool is about transparency.
When someone brings in gold to sell, I do not want the process to feel mysterious. I want clients to understand what they have, how it is being tested, and how the value is being calculated.
The XRF analyzer helps make that possible. You can see the metal content right in front of you. You can ask questions. You can make an informed decision.
That is especially important when selling scrap gold, estate jewelry, old chains, broken rings, coins, or inherited pieces.
A Rare Tool for a Local Independent Jeweler
There are very few, if any, jewelers in the Carmel-by-the-Sea area who have invested in this level of precious metal testing equipment.
As an independent private jeweler and appraiser, I chose to make this investment because it supports the way I want to do business: clearly, fairly, and with as much information as possible.
Clients deserve better than guessing. They deserve to see the results and understand the process.
Helpful for Gold Buying, Appraisals, Estates, and Jewelry Verification
This technology is useful for many jewelry services, including gold buying, jewelry appraisals, estate evaluations, scrap gold testing, silver testing, platinum testing, coin testing, and precious metal verification.
Whether you are selling gold for cash, evaluating estate jewelry, verifying a purchase, or simply curious about what you own, XRF testing provides clear answers without damaging your jewelry.
