Diamond Fluorescence: The Simple Guide You Actually Need

Quick Facts About Diamond Fluorescence

If you’ve ever seen a diamond glow under blacklight—you’ve seen fluorescence.
But what most people don’t know is…it’s not a flaw. In many cases, it’s actually a benefit.

Here’s the simple, no-confusion version:

1. Fluorescence is just a reaction to light

Fluorescence happens when a diamond is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light.

  • Sunlight contains UV, so some diamonds glow
  • Blacklight makes the effect more obvious

Most fluorescence appears blue, but it can also be yellow, green, or orange (rare).

2. Blue fluorescence can make a diamond look whiter

This is the part most people don’t realize.

In diamonds with a slight yellow tint (especially J–M color range):

  • Blue fluorescence offsets yellow tones
  • The diamond can appear brighter and whiter in daylight

3. Fluorescence can lower the price

Because of long-standing industry bias, diamonds with fluorescence are often discounted.

  • Medium to strong fluorescence can offer better value
  • Most show no negative visual impact

This means you can sometimes get a better-looking diamond for less.

4. Very strong fluorescence can be an issue (rare)

In a small number of diamonds with very strong fluorescence:

  • The diamond may appear slightly hazy or oily

This is uncommon and easily identified in person.

5. Fluorescence isn’t always blue

In some diamonds, fluorescence appears in other colors and can influence value.

  • Green, yellow, or orange fluorescence can occur
  • Some stones show unique visual effects under different lighting

6. Almost all diamonds have some fluorescence

Even diamonds graded “None” can react under stronger UV conditions.

Fluorescence exists on a spectrum—it is not simply yes or no.

7. Why fluorescence matters

Fluorescence is one of the most misunderstood characteristics in diamonds.

  • It can improve appearance
  • It can improve value
  • It adds individuality to a stone

Bottom Line

Fluorescence is not something to avoid—it is something to understand.

When selected carefully, it can provide a brighter appearance, better value, and a more dynamic diamond.
