Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Selling Jewelry on Consignment
What’s the Difference Between Consignment and Liquidation?
Consignment: I aim to sell your jewelry for more than scrap value by finding a direct buyer willing to pay closer to current market price. Items typically remain in your possession until sold. This route may take longer, but often yields a higher return.
Liquidation: If you’re looking for a faster solution, I also offer outright purchase or scrap value offers—perfect for those wanting quick cash. Liquidation prices are lower and based on current metal and diamond scrap markets.
Who Is Responsible for Taxes When Selling Jewelry on Consignment?
Tax responsibility depends on whether you’re selling as an individual or a business.
For you (the jewelry owner): If you're selling personal jewelry and make less than what you originally paid, you typically don’t owe taxes. However, if you’re selling as a business or regularly selling jewelry for a profit, you may need to report it as income. Consult a tax professional for specific guidance.
For me (the consignment seller): Since all sales go through my eBay account, eBay sends me a tax document (1099-K) at the end of the year. I report my consignment earnings as income and handle taxes on my percentage of the sale.
Will I Receive a Tax Form from eBay?
No. Since the sale is processed through my eBay account, eBay sends the tax document (1099-K) to me, not you. You will not receive any tax forms from eBay for consigned jewelry.
Do I Need to Report My Jewelry Sale on My Taxes?
If you originally paid more for the jewelry than what it sells for, there’s typically no taxable income.
If you sell the jewelry for more than you originally paid, you may need to report it as a capital gain. A tax professional can advise you based on your situation.
How Do You Handle Taxes on Consignment Sales?
I only report my percentage of the sale as income.
I can deduct expenses like eBay fees, shipping costs, and other selling expenses to reduce my taxable income.
eBay provides a 1099-K tax document to me at the end of the year for all sales made through my account.
Can You Provide Tax Advice?
I’m not a tax professional, so I can’t provide tax advice. If you have concerns about how selling jewelry may impact your taxes, I recommend speaking with a tax expert.
